Nirmal Purja also known as “Nimsdai” was one of the few names in modern mountaineering, who became synonymous with speed, courage, and the impossible. Nims Purja, world’s most celebrated high-altitude climbers, built a remarkable legacy by repeatedly challenging the limits of what was considered possible on the world’s highest mountains.

His historic “Project possible” made him a global mountaineering icon where he climbed all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just 189 days. Nimsdai was about to make another ascent to Broad peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.

Unfortunately an avalanche struck in between camp 2 and 3 on the west ridge of the mountain which swept away Nims dai along with other nine climbers on 30 July, 2026. As soon as they lost contact, rescue teams went out for them but due to extreme weather and dangerous terrain they could not locate them early.

Who Was Nirmal Purja (Nimsdai)?

Nirmal Purja was an iconic British-Nepali mountaineer and elite former special forces soldier who was born on July 25, 1983, in Dana village of Myagdi, Nepal. He completed his early life in Chitwan. All of his three elder brothers and his father served in Gurkha military units and growing up he also became passionate towards Gurkha.

This eventually led him to Britain, where he joined the Brigade of Gurkhas in 2003. Then he continuously served for six years and then he joined Britain’s elite Special Boat Service (SBS). He was the first Gurkha to enter the unit and military life.

His military life made him withstand cold-weather and high altitude environments while teaching discipline, physical conditioning, decision-making and ability to operate in extreme environments. This made him prepare for some of the world’s highest mountain climbing in his later life.

He famously shattered climbing records, most notably summiting all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter mountains in just six months and six days. He also made history with the first-ever winter ascent of K2 and died in an avalanche on Broad Peak.

How did Nims Purja become an Mountaineering Icon?

Nims Dai left his military career and started his passion towards mountaineering in 2018. However, Nimsdai used to do mountain climbing during his vacation trip and successfully climbed Dhaulagiri (2014)and Mount Everest (2016).

Then, Purja launched his project named “Project Possible 14/7” in 2019, his extraordinary objective to climb all 14 mountains above 8000 meters in seven months made him popular worldwide. He completed the project within six months and six days from April to October of 2019.

• His first six-summit phase included mountains like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga, Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu which he completed from 23 April to 24 May 2019.
• Then, in his second phase, he climbed Nanga Parbat (8126 m, 3 July), Gasherbrum I (8080 m, 15 July), Gasherbrum II (8034 m, 18 July), K2 (8611 metres, 24 July) and Broad Peak (8047 m, 26 July).
• The third phase of “Project Possible 14/7” included mountains like Cho Oyu (8188 m on 23 Sep) and Manaslu (8163 m, on 27 Sep), and Shishapangma (8027 m, on 29 Oct).

This is how he completed his Project Possible 14/7 using supplemental oxygen within six months and six days (189 days). This achievement was remarkable not simply because he climbed all 14, but because he compressed an undertaking that normally takes years into less than seven months.

His project required:

Where is Broad Peak Located?

Broad Peak mountain stands tall at the height of 8,051 m (26,414 ft) on the western edge of the Baltoro Glacier in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. It is ranked as the world’s 12th-highest mountain and is located only 8 km from Mount K2, second highest mountain in the world.

The Broad Peak summit has many subsidiary submits where notable ones are:

• True main summit at 8,051 m,
• Rocky Summit at 8,028 m,
• Broad Peak Central at 8,011 m.

Its exposed broad ridge is always facing brutal weather conditions, frequent avalanches, and rockfalls of Karakoram region which is why the Broad Peak got the reputation of one of the dangerous mountain peaks among eight thousanders.

What is the Broad Peak Tragedy?

The broad peak tragedy refers to a devastating avalanche which took the lives of ten climbers on Broad Peak on July 30, 2026. The name of ten climbers who died on the way to the summit of Broad Peak are:

• Nirmal Purja “Nimsdai”: Expedition leader and record-breaking mountaineer based in Nepal/UK.
• Mallory Geis: Native of San Antonio who was only 39-year-old and even closed her Pilates studio for her first-ever 8,000-meter attempt.

Broad peak was not included on the summer plan of Nims Dai and he traveler all the way to Pakistan to summit Gasherbrum II. On July 21, 2026, he even successfully climbed mount Gasherbrum II without using a supplemental oxygen.

It was his 57th eight thousand summit and after that, he made a last minute plan to summit Broad Peak. Nims Purja announced that it was his last minute decision and if he complete it it would made him “first person in history to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice even without using supplemental oxygen. In his social media post he described all of it.

Timeline of Broad Peak Avalanche (2026)

July 2026

According to National Geographic’s reconstruction, a major wind storm hit the region on 18th July. Some climbers who recently climbed the mountain experienced unusual high winds, extreme humidity which resulted in accumulation of fresh snowfall in the steep portion of slopes. This resulted in the high risk of an avalanche.

Morning of the 30 July

At exactly 9:30 am, a large avalanche occurred in between Camp 2 and Camp 3 at an altitude of around 6600 to 6700 meters. At that time, Nimsdai along with other 9 climbers were moving for summit push and were on sloppy terrain of around 30 to 45 degrees. The avalanche swept away all ten climbers within a second of time.

Within an Hour

Nims Purja satellite GPS tracker recorded a drop of roughly 800 meters whereas Nadhira’s recorded her fall at least 1700 meters below the point of Avalanche struck. An eyewitness of K2 base camp reported the avalanche to respected authorities.

31st July

Then, two helicopters controlled by Askari Aviation, a Pakistan military aviation subsidiary began searching for ten climbers but due to weather conditions, they could not locate them. Also, EliteExped from Nepal flew to Gilgit-Baltistan region with additional Nepali climber to search them.

Later on they found the body of Nadhira Al Harthy, Pur Bahadur Gurung, and Mallory Geis from the base of the avalanche zone.

August 1, 2026

Nimsdai company, Elite Exped released an official statement that all ten climbers died along with Nims Purja.

Nims Purja Death: How Did He Die?

The tragic death of Nims Purja was caused by an avalanche on Broad Peak, Pakistan, on July 30, 2026. Nims Purja was leading the team of nine other climbers to Broad Peak.

When an avalanche struck at 9 am local time at around 6,600 m, Nimdai along with nine other climbers got swept away between camps 2 and 3 on the west ridge of the mountain. They became lost and even aerial search teams from Pakistan and Nepal could not successfully locate them on the day the accident occurred.

The extreme high altitude, unstable snow, and weather resulted in delayed rescue which took the life of Nirmal Purja along with all other climbers. He was only 43 years old at the time of his death and his Nirmal Purja death was announced by Elite Exped.

On 2nd of August, 2026, found his body and his body was transported to London after British military personnel and family members arrived in Pakistan was on August 9, 2026.

Nirmal Purja and nine other climber’s family got heartwarming condolence from all around the world, from veteran climbers to higher ranked authorities.

• William, Prince of Wales, called Nims Purja “one of the world’s greatest mountaineers”, He expressed his heart warming condolences to the families of everyone lost.
• Wes Streeting working as the Defence Secretary of UK  also described Nirmal Purja as “an inspirational man”. He added his military service and mountaineering achievements wer popular all around the globe.
• Prime Minister of Nepal, Balendra shah also mourned for Nirmal Purja death along with other six Nepali climbers and highlighted his dedication, courage, and contribution towards the mountaineering .
• Nimsdai Brother, Kamal also said that the heartbroken tragedy has occurred and are proud of their brother’s legacy.

Notable Climbing Achievements

• On January 16, 2021, Purja along with nine other Nepali mountaineers complete the historic climb to Mount K2 in winter.
• He set a new speed record of climbing Kangchenjunga, Mount Everest, and Lhotse consecutively without supplemental oxygen. Purja completed it within 8 days 23 hours, and 10 minutes.
• Nims Purja broke world records of fastest time to summit all 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen within 2 years and 5 months on 4 October, 2024. This also made him broke the world record of fastest to summit all 14 peaks both with and without supplemental oxygen.

• He summited Nanga Parbat in Pakistan on July 3, 2025. This was his 50th successful ascent of eight-thousander and 22nd victory without supplemental oxygen.
• Nimsdai again broke his own world record of fastest summit to Everest and Lhotse within 13 hours even without using supplemental oxygen in May 2026.
• His successful 56th ascent of an 8,000 meters peaks was Mount Makalu.

Nirmal Purja and the Future of Nepali Mountaineering

The death of Nirmal Purja leaves a significant gap in mountaineering community of Nepal but this does not mean influence he created will disappear with him. He was always challenging himself and devoted much of his life to the mountains. Nimsdai always used to speak that death is certain and fear of death will never stop him from climbing mountains. For him, climbing is not only a simple adventure but it was a way of testing human resilience, human courage and determination.

Nims Purja was attempting for Broad peak summit with nine other climbers but an avalanche took their life and changed their story forever. This broad peak tragedy is a reminder that no matter how experienced, skilled or fearless you are, the unexpected dangers and challenges are always there to take make you vulnerable.

Nims Purja was not only a mountaineer, he was a symbol of hope, courage, determination, and inspiration of Nepalese and newcomers mountaineers. Though he is gone, the story of Nimsdai will remain part of the history of Himalayan and Karakoram mountaineering.
