Typical Day on the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal

Typical Day on the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal

The Everest Base Camp Trek (EBC Trek) is a dream adventure for many, and as a guide with over eight years of experience, I have led hundreds of trekkers through this incredible journey. Every day presents new challenges, breathtaking views, and unique cultural experiences.

The trek to the EBC is moderately difficult and takes you to the legendary Everest base camp and the Kalapatthar. Experiencing the panoramic view of the Mahalangur Himalayan Range in this 14-day trip is something you will never forget in your life.

Along with Everest, one can view other mountains like Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. Here’s my experience of what a typical day looks like on this legendary trek.

Reaching Lukla: Gateway to Everest Region

Your journey to Everest Base Camp Trek Nepal begins in Kathmandu. After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, we will transfer you to your hotel in the Thamel area in a private vehicle.

Thamel is a busy market where you can buy the trekking gear and any clothing you might need before your trek. In the evening, we will gather for a short briefing about your trek and enjoy delicious Nepali cuisine.

Flight to Lukla

The adventure truly begins with an exhilarating 30-minute flight to Lukla (2,800 m) from Tribhuvan International Airport. But during the peak season, we need to travel to Ramechhap for about 4 hours. After breakfast, we will take a flight to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, one of the most thrilling airports in the world. The airport has a short runway and a thrilling view due to the hills and mountains surrounding the runway. Do you want to know why Lukla Airport is called one of the most dangerous airports in the world?

Trek to Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft)

Our porters and Sherpa team will be waiting for us there. After meeting them, we start trekking towards Phakding. The trail to Phakding is a gradual descent through pine forests, passing mani stones (Buddhist inscriptions) and prayer wheels. Some trekkers might feel discomfort because of gaining sudden height. At our teahouse in Phakding, they serve us meals like noodles, fried rice, dal bhat, and garlic soup (good for altitude).

A Typical Trekking Day on Everest Base Camp Trek

Almost all trekking days on the Everest base camp trek are similar. Here’s how a typical trekking day looks at different starting and ending points:

Trek Day from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,286ft)

After breakfast, we prepare ourselves to walk along the Dudh Koshi River. We will cross the famous suspension bridges, including the Hillary Bridge. The trail to Namche Bazaar is steep. The final climb to Namche Bazaar is steep and challenging. Walking through the Rhododendron Forest is a tough yet mesmerizing experience.

The final two hours will be more difficult as we ascend to Namche Bazar. At the tea house, we will have various options for our dinner, from Nepali dal bhat to western pasta and pizza.

A Typical Acclimatization Day

This is an off day or, let’s say, an acclimatization day. We will visit the village nearby, hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m), or have a glimpse of the Sherpa Museum. Namche is a well-facilitated town with a variety of things to do. There are internet cafes, gear shops, pharmacies, and a German bakery where you can enjoy the apple pie.

The Namche bazar provides you with many opportunities. Click here to read more about Namche Bazar. We will keep ourselves active to adjust our bodies to the changing height. You might feel some headache or mild altitude sickness. Whatever the case is, do not hesitate to inform us.

A Trek Day to Tengboche

On this day, we will trek through a lush rhododendron forest to reach Tengbochge (3,870 m). We can witness the view of Mount Ama Dablam, the mother mountain, before reaching Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the region. The trail to Tengboche is quite steep.

The Tengboche monastery holds a strong faith of the Sherpa people of the area. It holds a pivotal role in the spiritual life of the sherpas. You can take photographs of the mountains on the backdrop. The availability of foods also decreases as we ascend. We have limited options of foods such as boiled potatoes, dal bhat, and garlic soup. As we are walking in the higher altitudes, the options for toilets also get minimized. Squat toilets are more common in the mountains.

A Trek Day to Dingboche

The next day, we will head towards Dingboche (4,360 m). We will descend to the Imja River and then climb up to Dingboche, a beautiful village in a wide valley. As we have walked enough days, we might feel a bit exhausted. But the yak cheese in the village will make us energetic. Some trekkers might feel affected by altitude. Keep observing the rhythm of your body.

Another Acclimatization Day in Dingboche

This is the second acclimatization day on the Everest Base Camp Trek. We need to get some rest to complete the final ascend to EBC. We will visit Dingboche and Imja villages. We can also take a short hike to the Nagarjun Hill or the Chukung Ri (5,546 m). The top of Nagarjun Hill provides views of Mt. Makalu, Mt. Lobuche, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. I have noticed many will feel harder breathing at this altitude.

Trek Day to Lobuche

After breakfast, our trek begins with a climb through the Khumbu Khola valley to Duglha. The route to Dusa is difficult. Memorials of climbers who lost their lives are decorated with praying flags and stones are found on the way. As we are closer to the Dusa village, the valley begins to shrink.

Following the rocky path covered with massive boulders, we get to the path that connects Gokyo Lakes and Cho-La Pass. Mountain peaks like Khumbuste (6,636 m), Lingtren (6,749 m), and Pumori (7,161 m) may also be seen on the way. There are limited teahouses in Lobuche. We will enjoy the most basic food in one of the teahouses and rest overnight.

The Most Awaited Day of the Trek

Our day begins with a trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, the last stop before reaching Everest Base Camp (EBC). Dalai Lama called it “the steps to heaven. The trail takes us through a rugged landscape of rocky paths and glacier moraine, testing our endurance as we ascend higher into the thin air. After a short rest at Gorak Shep (5,164 m), we push forward toward Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), the iconic gathering point for climbers preparing to conquer the world’s highest peak. The journey is challenging and physically demanding terrain with cold.

Upon reaching EBC, we’ll stand in the shadow of the mighty Khumbu Icefall, surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan giants. Here, we’ll soak in the incredible scenery, take photos, and appreciate this milestone in our Everest adventure. After spending some time at Base Camp, we retrace our steps back to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay. The experience of being so close to Everest makes this a truly unforgettable day.

Hike to Kala Patthar

On this day, we will start our trek early in the morning before sunrise, as we will go for a challenging hike to Kala Patthar (5,550 m/18,209 ft) for an astonishing, breathtaking sunrise over Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks. After soaking in the panoramic views of the golden mountains, we will descend back to Gorakh Shep. We will have our breakfast and descend to Pheriche (4,240m/13,911ft), a lower-altitude village.

This village is known for its more comfortable climate and better oxygen levels. The day involves both steep ascents and long descents, making it physically demanding yet incredibly rewarding.

Descending to Namche and Back to Kathmandu

Once again, we will descend down to Pangboche and Tengboche. Tracing back the previous trail, we will reach Namche Bazaar. The trail is a bit longer, but as we are descending, it will be much easier. In Namche, the hot coffee and bakeries await us. Next day, on reaching Lukla, we will enjoy a farewell dinner along with the Sherpas.

As we celebrate at Lukla, such a fantastic yet demanding adventure. Talking the flight from Lukla, we will be back to Kathmandu. The trek ends with lifelong memories of Everest Base Camp Trek Nepal. This journey tests endurance, but the rewards are worth it!
