Kailash Mansarovar Bike Tour: The Ultimate Adventure for Thrill-Seekers

Far away from Kathmandu, we thought of the Kailash Mansarovar Bike Tour. We searched and considered going to the land of Kailash on a motorbike, rather than driving in a 4-wheel vehicle. It was more about Mount Kailash and the thrilling adventure on the Ride to Mount Kailash on a bike.
I still have a vivid memory of the first day in Kathmandu. We felt the fresh air and the fluttering of prayer flags on the roofs of houses in Kathmandu. We were a bunch of crazy, restless mates, maybe, and planned a Kailash Mansarovar bike tour.
Awesome Holidays Nepal organized and served as our tour operator for our Motorcycle Trip to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

It was my dream to go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for years. I could see this dream going to be fulfilled. It was the mountain Kailash, the holy abode of lord shiva. The silence of the mountain, I wanted to feel. I have heard about Mount Kailash, the axis mundi, known as its spiritual center in the world.
We rode in 2025, hot engines echoing through the valley of Kathmandu, heading to Tibet. We were uncertain what we were going to find.
Is it the thrill of driving in the thin air or the spiritual enlightenment we were feeling hidden within us? Or both.
Why Kailash Mansarovar by Motorbike?
Because Mount Kailash called us!
Everyone has a choice for exploring Kailash. Some dream of walking, some reach there on a bus, and this one, we pride ourselves on a motorbike. We have traveled to a lot of places in the world. But this trip is going to be something different.
The Motorcycle trip to Kailash Mansarovar is not just another adventure, but a blend of devotion, exhaustion, and the smell of petrol burning on the way. Maybe the aroma of incense burning on the way will blend with the smoke of our motorbikes.
The route to Kailash, an ancient trade route of the Silk Road, takes you to the land of monks, saints, and pilgrims who have been visiting Mount Kailash for centuries. Riding above 4000 m above the sea level might be challenging, the engine might not get enough air for combustion, and cough like an old man.
But we know, the views of the lakes, mountains, and glaciers are going to overcome the hurdles and exertion.
Route to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
As we did our research, we found various routes to Mount Kailash. One route was via Kerung- Saga, and another was via Nepalgunj- Hilsa. For us, the route from Kerung was a good option. We rode in 2025, hot engines echoing through the valley of Kathmandu, heading to Tibet. We were uncertain what we were going to find.
Is it the thrill of driving in the thin air or the spiritual enlightenment we were feeling hidden within us? Or both.
The road stretched north from Kathmandu toward Syabrubesi, then to Kyirong, the security checkpoint on the China border. We saw the strict army faces on the other side of the prayer flags and praying mani wheels. After passing the security permit check, we crossed the gateway to Mount Kailash.
Soon, the roads widened, the air was colder, and the land was dry. The cold here was different from any other part of the world.
We rode to Saga, a small town, to accommodate. The hotels here have better facilities than in Kerung. We refilled ourselves and our motorbikes, ignited the engine to Lake Mansarovar, a lake that glows turquoise even when clouds hide the sun. The panoramic views of the mountains around it were just wow.
At Lake Mansarovar, the water looked unreal. We parked our bikes near the shore, took our boots off, dipped our hands, and some just stared. I had heard that one drop of this lake can wash away my lifetimes of karma. I trusted the sayings and felt the changes in the air. Then we headed for Darchen. When the Tibetan winds slam your helmet, see herds of yaks crossing roads, and monks waving at you, you feel the emptiness, and there is nothing left to achieve more.

Tackling Altitude Sickness
Motorcycle Trip to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra along the old Silk Road, passing through ancient monasteries and the oldest cities, takes you to Mount Kailash. The asphalt road is wide, clean, but long, taking you to a height of 4,670m, an altitude that is enough to give you altitude sickness.
Yes, altitude sickness exists and can be quite serious if not treated in time. Starting from a mild headache, you might lose your sleep. You wish to take a rest all the time, your appetite is lost, and dizziness all the time. What you can do is drink enough water to keep the blood flowing through your veins.
Around Dolma La, my hands froze and my body shivered with cold. Probably, this was the most difficult part of the Kora. Maybe the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by motorcycle was not about reaching the peak, but it was about the emotional feeling of us highlighting ego, fear, and courage.
Completing the Kora, we returned rejuvenated from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, with faces dry and burnt, legs swollen, and lighter hearts. Now, it’s your turn to feel the divinity of Mount Kailash.
