After an early breakfast, the trek begins with a steep ascent along a zigzag trail of rocky slopes and narrow valleys, where thinning air tests endurance and devotion alike. Prayer flags lining the route guide pilgrims along this deeply sacred Himalayan path.

Holy Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Helicopter via Hilsa FAQs

What permits are needed to visit Mount Kailash?

You must obtain a Chinese (Group) Visa, Tibet Travel Permit (including Alien and Military Permits) via a registered tour operator. You can send us your copy of Passport and we will apply for you Tibet Permit. But, we need your original Passport at least 3 days prior to your departure for the tour.

How long in advance should I apply?

It’s recommended to book at least 4 weeks ahead with the copy of your valid passport to allow time for permit processing. In the different scenario, at least 3 days before if you can provide your Original Passport, we will be able to get your visa and permit from the Chinese Embassy of Kathmandu.

What documents are essential?

Required documents include a valid passport, Chinese visa, Tibet permits, health certificate, insurance, and, for Nepal departures, a signed consent form to complete the process. 2 passport size photo is always necessary so bring them.

When is the best time to undertake the Yatra?

The best time to visit Mount Kailash is between May and October, when the temperatures are milder, usually staying above 10°C. This period is also the most popular for travelers, as the weather is more pleasant and the oxygen levels are higher, making the journey a bit easier. While July and August fall in the monsoon season for Nepal and Tibet, the region around Mount Kailash doesn’t get too much rain (except in the far southeast). So even during these months, many pilgrims and travelers still consider it an ideal time to visit.

Can the Yatra be done in winter?

Winter (November–March) is not advised due to extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and impassable routes.

Is visiting during a full moon significant?

Yes-performing rituals like bathing in Lake Manasarovar during the full moon is considered spiritually potent.

What level of fitness is required?

A moderate to high fitness level is essential-participants should build stamina through cardio and strength training.

What about medical restrictions?

Individuals with severe heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor; a medical clearance is often mandatory.

How to cope with altitude sickness?

Acclimatize gradually, stay hydrated, climb slowly, and, if advised by a doctor, consider medications like Diamox and always listen to your body and talk with your guide.

Is there any hidden cost to be paid directly?

Any additional expenses that may arise due to delays, accidents, natural disasters, or political situations are not included in the package. Costs such as hiring a horse or horseman, rescue or evacuation services, Tibet visa split charges, and personal expenses like travel insurance, drinks, laundry, internet or phone calls, and extra transportation will also be the responsibility of the traveler. Moreover, if for any reason you choose not to join the Kailash Kora and stay back in Darchen for three days, you will need to cover your own food and accommodation during that period.

How much cash should I carry?

In Kathmandu, you can use major currencies such as USD, Euro, AUD, or even Indian Rupees. However, once you enter Tibet, all transactions must be done in Chinese currency, known as Yuan (RMB or Gorma). For the trip in Tibet, we recommend carrying around USD 1000 (or equivalent) to cover emergencies and possible expenses like hiring a horse during the Kailash Kora (Parikrama). Any unused Yuan can be exchanged back on your return journey.
