Bandipur City: A Newar Heritage in the Himalayan Foothills

Bandipur is a gorgeous village nestled on the foothills of the Himalayas above the Marshyangdi River Valley, near Pokhara, in Tanahun District, Gandaki province of Nepal. It is a hidden gem that one must visit if you are in Nepal. A town steeped in Newar heritage, Bandipur is a beautifully preserved cultural time capsule where century-old customs mix easily with calm Himalayan vistas.
Whether you’re on a romantic honeymoon, a family vacation, or looking for a quiet retreat following a long trek, the city welcomes you with cobbled lanes, red bougainvillea, and an atmosphere of timeless calm.
A Glance into Bandipur’s History and Scenery
Bandipur is also called ‘Queen of Hills.’ Once a busy stop along the Indo-Tibetan trade route, Bandipur prospered under Newar merchants who settled here in the 19th century. Before, the region was inhabited by the Magar community.
Later, the Newar community brought their riches and skill and created a city with amazing wooden facades, latticework balconies, and classic temples. The city has elegantly aged; its small roads are still car-free, its buildings intact, and the spirit is wild.

As you meander along the flagstone main street, elegant townhouses with sloping slate roofs and overhanging eaves will come your way. Incense, fresh coffee, and flowers permeate the air. Every step reveals ancient temples peeking down alleyways, and youngsters run unrestricted on the stone steps while seniors assemble to converse in Newari language.
From Bandipur’s hilltop perch, the 360-degree view ranges from the far-off shimmer of Dhaulagiri and Manaslu to the deep folds of the Marsyangdi Valley below. On a clear day, the Himalayas rise like painted gods, their silhouettes at dawn pink and dusk golden.

Culture, Cafés & Calm
You might be thinking what would be the best way to experience the beautiful Bandipur city. The answer is simple, it is to immerse yourself in the natural beauty, rich culture, and local way of life of Bandipur. This could entail hiking through nearby forests, visiting historic temples, interacting with locals, and sampling regional cuisine.

Hiking, Caves & Cycling Adventures
Bandipur provides more than just beauty for the daring. Siddha Gufa, Nepal’s biggest cave, is reached by a brief but steep climb where torchlights, ladders, and ropes lead you into an unreal subterranean cathedral. Deep within, you could hear a resident sadhu softly singing his chants, murmuring through rooms illuminated just by your headlamp.

If you’re ready for a lengthier walk, head toward Ramkot, a historic Magar village with round thatched-roof houses—among the last of their kind. Ending with a dinner at the Mountain View Restaurant, where the horizon spans from the Annapurna to Langtang, the walk provides a genuine rural experience.
